A deluge of foreign words is flooding Japan, leaving particularly the older Japanese confused about their native tongue, reports The Japan Times.

Mondegreen
English is a very rich language. By that I mean that it possesses a large vocabulary and a flexible grammar which together make it possible for a speaker or writer to express shades of meaning with great precision. It is therefore eminently suitable for the scientist who may require great accuracy, the philosopher who needs to set out complicated theories and the poet who wants variety with which to express fully his or her artistry. At the same time, it can be spoken by a child with simplicity and clarity.

One of the vagaries of the English language is that it is not phonetic. That is to say, it is not always possible to tell how a word should be pronounced from its spelling. The main reasons for this are historical. English was not ‘invented’ logically, but has been developed over many hundreds of years, taking in words from other languages as its source material.
