Animal Welfare in the UK
It has been said that the English are a nation of animal lovers. In support of that idea, attention is drawn to the many laws and organisations which exist here to protect animals. However, one could equally well argue that there would be no need for such laws and organisations if we all cared so much about animal welfare! We often seem to make illogical and arbitrary decisions about which animals we like and which are viewed less favourably.

Award-winning chef Antony Worrall Thompson has run several highly successful restaurants in the UK and is a well-known TV personality. This is one of his recipes.
Manchester-Liverpool
Dear Reader,
I have decided to call my September column ‘Manchester- Liverpool’, after the famous tune of the same name which was used by the Soviet TV to accompany the weather forecasts. I am writing it while sitting at the computer in my friend David Wright’s study in Runcorn, UK, which is situated right between Manchester and Liverpool.

For most people Manchester is a city that conjures up many exciting images the birthplace of the Industrial revolution and the worlds first passenger railway station a thriving social and music scene and a world famous football team Manchester has a rich history and is today a captivating multicultural metropolis.
My visit to Great Britain
Dear Reader,
Today when we have seen off the old year many people are looking back to see what was good (or bad) in the past. Usually good things are most likely to be recollected and we are going to speak about signs of the past preserved in our mind, that is memories, or some memorable things which are sentimental proofs of something very dear to us.
